Drive along the motorway and through the Esterel mountains to Ste Maxime, lying on the Bay of St Tropez, to board one of the public boats that regularly cross over to St Tropez – a chance to have a lovely view from the water of the colourful old town and its port. Disembarking from the boat, wander the quayside lined with cafés and restaurants, with oversized yachts and motorboats tied up in the water. Later head into the winding lanes of the old town with its fish market, and its old pink and yellow Provençal houses that offer a charming alternative to the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the port. Visit the remarkably fine collection of post-Impressionist paintings exhibited in the 16th cent chapel of L’Annonciade, a reminder that from the late 1890s St Tropez became an important centre of artistic activity – works from Signac, Picabia, Matisse, Manguin, Braque and others form a truly world class collection of art. There’s time free for lunch, to sit in a café and watch the world go by, or else delve into the many boutique shops to be found in the town, before taking the boat back across the Bay and returning home.
